Caribbean and Pacific Beaches
The narrowest strip of land in the Americas; surrounded by both Pacific Ocean and Caribbean coasts. Beaches are on both sides of the country.
Driving time from Panama City to Colon province is two hours. Costa Arriba de Colon is possibly the easiest Caribbean beach trip in Panama. Portobelo is a historical town on the Atlantic side of Panama, mentioned in every tour book about Panama. Spaniard fortifications make this town speak a fascinating history of gold and pirate attacks.
Passing the bay of Portobelo (by boat) there is a secluded beach that locals call
Puerto Frances. This is a beautiful and tranquil bay with open areas. Large trees that shade and the clear Caribbean waters that roll in gently.
Driving pass Portobelo, 90 minutes away is La Isla Grande. The safe spot to park the car is called Guaira, and one day is U$5. The boat ride is $2 per person. And the island is superb… little restaurants everywhere, they are all good, especially since seafood is always on the menu, and beer is always cold.
If you rather go to the pacific coast of Panama it’s even easier. There is only one way west. The Pan-American Highway runs East-West in Panama; every road to the left (as you drive away from Panama City) takes you to the beach. Some of the access roads are paved.
The closest beach with facilities on the pacific coast of Panama is called Gorgona, and its 90 minutes driving. El Palmar, Rio Mar, Santa Clara, are just a few with paved road all the way to the beach.
Restaurants and hotels are also available at these destinations. These are just within the provinces of Panama and Cocle, not to mention the endless amounts of beach destinations Panama has to offer.
