Patricio Roca - PanamaRide.com
Departing from the city of panama, a three hour ride by road awaits you, practically to the end of the Pan-American Highway . This of course is in panama. In a very rural, yet colorful part of the country, specifically the eastern region of the isthmus. Mainly inhabited by the Kuna indigenous groups and commonly known as Bayano. This region was formalized in the late sixties. By the construction of the bridge and the damming of the river in order to build a hydroelectric plant, the second largest one in the country nowadays.
The only means of transportation here (Bayano) are 15 Hp- outboard engine dug out canoes or "piragua" as locals call it.
Simply undiscovered turf. Only a few groups of people know what you talk about when you speak about the wonders around these areas. This is a one day trip. Mainly because of the distances we have to cover. The water portion takes around one hour to reach the caves and one hour back to the rendezvous point. The time in the caves is not set, since the reaction most people have is of not wanting to leave the place. This is a nature lover's destination. Crystal clear natural springs surround these amazing lands. The rock formations inside the cave vary throughout it, the cave cathedral is around thirty feet high, but of course this varies if rainfall is constant. Once you exit this place a world of illuminated landscapes flash in front of your eyes. Light scuba diving is possible but the transporting of gear boosts costs to almost double, since scuba gear is as bulky as a person. The water is at around 85 degrees Fahrenheit year around, it drops a few degrees at night but nothing significant for the tropics. The landscapes around the caves and above them will surely transmit a feeling of inner peace.
